Hoorae-Jasik can be loosely translated to “bastard,” but the word’s referring to someone who has ill manners and is disrespectful to others, thus considered a disgrace to their parents.
Recently, I became more self-conscious about using my dad immigrant experiences to make different art projects. I have grown apart from my dad, and I never asked for permission when using his stories. So I have been asking myself, Am I a Hoorae-Jasik?
This also made me wonder if other 2nd generation Korean American writers and creators are in the same sense Hoorae-Jasiks for using the immigrant experiences of their parents. Do I, or they, have the right to do that? I was curious what my family, all different degrees of immigrants, would respond to this.
